5 amenities to look for when booking a hostel

1. Cancellation

No one books with the intention to cancel however even while vacationing things go awry. I try to book ahead for better prices or to assure a hostel in the location that I want, however I have had to cancel several times even last minute. Most hostels have 24-48 hour cancellation policies which makes it easy for last minute changes. Do note if you book with hostelworld has a few dollar deposit when booking which may be kept if you cancel but this isn’t much in lieu of convenient cancellation.  (Also note some countries want to see your booking before they will issue a visa or accept you through border patrol. In this situation you can book, obtain a visa, then change in country if the need arises.)

2. Free Breakfast

It may not seem like much but free breakfast at a hostel can save you time and money. I have stayed at several hostels and their breakfasts have greatly varied in quality however having the option is a perk. Also note that some may not offer free breakfast but at a lower cost than it may be if you went out. (Note some places also offer free dinners or family dinners for a few euros.)

3. Location, Location, Location

If you plan on seeing the “tourist” attractions you don’t want to spend extra money and time getting to these locations. The great news with hosteling is most are in very desirable locations whether it be by subway, bus stops, or near the sights themselves.

4. Group Activities

Common rooms, the chances to meet new people and free activities sound pretty great right?  Especially if hosteling alone this is definitely a perk to hosteling. If you are feeling like being social make sure you check out the hostel’s activities prior to booking. Some have nightly happy hours, group dinners, or outings to local places. (One of my favorites was in Philadelphia was going to salsa dancing lessons at a local bar.)

5. Free Tours

Now everybody loves that word “free”! You will find that most hostels have daily tours which are truly free and can be joined once you check in. Walking tours and bike tours are very commonly led my hostel staff who are locals to the area and can give you the locals perspective. These are a great opportunity to start seeing the city or fill a morning or afternoon that you didn’t have anything planned.
