Nashville: A foodies guide

So the way I see it people travel for a multitude of reasons, one of which is to experience all the wonderful foods around the world. I typically don’t travel just to enjoy amazing food but Nashville was truly a foodie vacation for me! There was such great food to be eaten and plenty of which I didn’t even get to try. I have outlined some of the best eateries to experience in music city.

Breakfast

The most important meal of the day right? Well, when in Nashville this was definitely a favorite. One day we skipped lunch just to eat a second breakfast which was soooo worth it!

Biscuit Love

This is definitely a trending spot and is a common recommendation for breakfast when in Nashville. Located in the up and coming Gulch area of Nashville his place does breakfast right. Be sure to get there early as there is usually a line outside but goes quickly overall. My friend and I split a couple of their most well-known dishes the bonuts and the east nasty. The bonuts are sugar-covered fried donut goodness with blueberries and a sweet cream topping. Looking for something a little less sweet? The east nasty is for you. This take on a fried chicken sandwich with cheese and gravy to top it this may clog up some arteries but is a must-have when in the south.

Five daughters bakery

Famous for its 100 layer donut (yes 100 layer!) the five daughters bakery is ahhh-mazing. This is located in another trendy area of Nashville, 12 south. With several signature 100 layer donuts and some additional seasonal ones, this was our second breakfast. These donuts came highly recommended and were so worth a second breakfast! We split a lemon poppyseed and strawberry shortcake which were both ah-mazing. With several thin layers compiling a donut and filled with a sweet cream these were some of the best donuts we have had.

Monell’s

Another Uber driver recommendation which we hit on our last morning was Monell’s. There are two locations, the original was close to our Airbnb in Germantown. Located in an old house this is family-style dining so prepare to meet some new people and share some great breakfast. Pace yourself here though because the goodness keeps coming and you want to make sure you get a chance to try everything. Their price is a little higher at almost $18 but it’s all you can eat and you will definitely have some great food!

Nashville is known for…

Hot Chicken

You have likely heard of Nashville’s famous hot chicken but where can you find the best hot chicken? Most likely you have heard of Hattie B’s as this is one of the most well-known places but if you want the original hot chicken make sure to check out Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack.

The Pharmacy

Located in East Nashville, The Pharmacy was recommended to me by several people before going to Nashville and was not a disappointment. It has great hamburgers and a fun atmosphere with outdoor dining for a nice summer evening.

Mas Tacos

Right across from the Pharmacy is Mas Tacos. This started out in a Winnebago but has since been moved into a corner shop in East Nashville. Authentic mexican cuisine at its best!

BBQ

There may be a constant rift between Texas and Tennessee on who has the best barbecue but we will leave that opinion up to you. (Personally I am from by Kansas City so I would say they also lay claim to the best BBQ.) Again, uber drivers know best and definitely had something to say about the best BBQ too. The three top BBQ places were Peg Leg Porers, Edley’s and Martin’s.

Peg Leg Porkers is located in the trendy area known as The Gulch. This area has the famous wing mural, Biscuit Love which I mentioned earlier, and high-end shopping. Edley’s can be found in another up and coming area is known as 12 south. This is the area where Five Daughters Bakery is located as well as more shopping. Lastly, Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint off 4th South a few blocks from Broadway also came highly recommended. I have to be honest we did not make it to any of these places but it was the consensus from all the locals we spoke with that these were definitely the ones to try.

On Broadway

One of my favorite things about downtown Nashville is the various atmosphere of the bars and the plethora of rooftops to enjoy in the summer.

If you are looking at staying closer to downtown you will still find several food options. Most of this will be American and bar food. My friend and I enjoyed getting appetizers at different eateries rather than eating one big dinner. We started at the end of Broadway at Acme Feed and Seed. With food served on floors 1 and 2, this old feed building has a fun atmosphere as some delicious appetizers. We had the spicy grilled cheese which definitely had some kick to it!

Broadway basics

Additionally, on Broadway, you will find a Hard Rock and bars owned by some well-known country stars including Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan to name a few. The food in these aren’t much different so take your pick.

So there it is, some of the best food to enjoy while in Music City. Nashville is a great city to visit in a weekend or longer if you get a chance. I highly recommend taking your stretchy pants and an appetite for this trip!
